Paraprofessional Scholarship

The Suburban Houston Association for Bilingual Education is an advocacy organization for the rights of language minority children. SHABE pursues the implementation of educational policies and effective bilingual-bicultural programs, which promote equal educational opportunity and academic excellence for language minority children.


In keeping with this fundamental goal, SHABE is offering two $500 scholarships to paraprofessionals wishing to pursue a teaching career in bilingual education.

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Student Applicants

This scholarship is for future bilingual educators in Texas. The following is required:

1. Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in Texas before spring 2013.  (Award will be issued upon proof of enrollment)

2. Applicants who are already pursuing an undergraduate degree must submit an official transcript reflecting satisfactory academic performance with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

3. Applicant will not be eligible for a scholarship if he/she is related to a scholarship committee member or SHABE Executive Board Member.

4. Applicant must be bilingual and biliterate in English and another language as determined by essay responses.

5. Applicant must submit three signed letters of recommendation which reflect their academic achievement, community service, and commitment to bilingual education (at least one must be from their current supervisor).

6. Scholarship funds must be used no later than September 1, 2013.
